Supportive Schools: Putting Students First

Every child deserves a safe, welcoming, and supportive place to learn. As both a teacher and a parent, I have seen how the right supports in a classroom can make all the difference—not only in academic success, but in helping students feel like they belong.

In Elk Island Public Schools, our classrooms are full of bright, capable students with unique strengths and diverse needs. That diversity is something to celebrate, but it also brings challenges. Teachers and staff are working hard every day to meet those needs, often with limited resources. I believe it is the responsibility of the Board of Trustees to ensure those staff members have the tools, time, and support they need to do their jobs well.

Supportive schools start with students-first budgeting. That means directing as much funding as possible into classrooms and to the front-line staff who work directly with students. When resources reach the students who need them most, we create stronger learning environments for everyone.

Support also means expanded opportunities. Students should have access to a wide range of programming, from inclusive supports and specialized services to cultural, language, and advanced academic programs. These opportunities open doors for students to discover their passions, build confidence, and prepare for the future.

And finally, supportive schools must be safe schools. Every student and staff member deserves to feel secure and cared for at school. Collecting real data on student and staff safety, reviewing policies regularly, and ensuring they are applied fairly and consistently are essential steps in building schools where everyone can thrive.

For me, supportive schools are the foundation of everything else. When students feel safe, included, and supported, they are able to learn and grow. When teachers have the resources they need, they can focus on what matters most—helping students succeed. And when families know their children are cared for, they can feel confident in the schools at the heart of our community.

Supportive schools are about more than funding and policies—they are about ensuring every child has the chance to reach their full potential. That will always be my focus as trustee.
